How to Make the Most of Your Vision Insurance Benefits Before Year-End
Posted on October 25, 2024 in Vision Health
With a new year quickly approaching, now’s the time to get the most out of your vision insurance benefits. Many vision insurance plans don’t allow unused benefits to roll over, so if you haven’t taken advantage of your full benefits yet, time is running out to do so.
Ways to make the most of your vision insurance
Here are some ways to help you take full advantage of your vision insurance before Dec. 31:
Schedule an eye exam
The American Optometric Association recommends adults between 18 and 64 schedule an eye exam at least every two years for low risk individuals and every year for at-risk individuals. These exams assess your vision and play a role in the early detection of conditions like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
Most vision insurance plans cover an annual eye exam at little to no cost, so if you haven't had a chance to get your visit in this year, be sure to schedule an appointment to get the most out of your benefits!
Invest in a second pair of lenses
Even if you're happy with your current vision correction lenses, having a second pair is a smart investment. A back-up pair ensures you're prepared if you lose, break, or forget your primary option. Plus, a second pair offers a fun way to change up your look and match different styles or occasions!
Buy new contact lenses
If you wear contacts, be sure to order them before your current benefits expire. Purchasing a year's supply is a great way to maximize your benefits, and many companies offer discounts on larger orders.
Try prescription sunglasses
Most vision insurance plans with frame allowances also cover prescription sunglasses. If you spend a lot of time outdoors but don’t always want to wear contacts, prescription sunglasses are a great option. They provide clear vision while keeping your eyes protected from the sun!
Plan for next year
While you’re wrapping up this year’s vision benefits, take the time to plan for next year. If you anticipate changes in your vision needs or want to explore new coverage options, the end of the year is a good time to review your insurance plan and make adjustments during open enrollment.
Also, if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), now’s the time to consider those funds. FSAs typically have a “use it or lose it” rule, meaning you’ll forfeit any unused funds at the end of the year. HSAs allow you to roll over any unused dollars to the new year. Both accounts can be used toward eligible vision expenses like eye exams, contact lenses, glasses, or prescription sunglasses.
Don’t let your vision insurance benefits go to waste
By scheduling appointments, upgrading eyewear, and using available allowances, you can make the most of your vision insurance and FSA dollars before the year end. Taking these simple steps ensures that your eye health is maintained and that you maximize the value of your plans.
